INSIDE THE CHELSEA STUDIO WITH JENNA AULIE
Meet Jenna Aulie: Regina photographer and a member of the Chelsea studio. Jenna turns the camera on herself. Wanting to challenge herself creatively and step outside her comfort zone, Jenna used this self-portrait session as an opportunity to experience what it's like to be on the other side of the lens.
Jenna grew up in the small town of Redvers, Saskatchewan, before moving to Regina to attend university. She spent two years studying art before discovering her passion for design and transferring to SaskPolytech's Graphic Communications program. While there, Jenna competed in the BEIC Start-up Challenge for entrepreneurs, earning second place in the student stream. The experience gave her the confidence to officially launch her photography business, Jenna Aulie Creations.
When she's not behind the camera, you'll likely find Jenna spending time with her beloved pet rats and dogs.
Q: What was the vision behind this shoot?
Jenna: “I wanted to do this shoot as a way to push myself out of my comfort zone, and get a better feel of being in front of the camera. I had a loose idea of what I wanted to do going into the shoot, and as I started getting into the flow I knew more and more what my vision was. The story behind this shoot is the feeling of self-acceptance and growth. I have never felt comfortable in front of a camera or people, especially in high school, but I know that I have grown and flourished. Though there have been dark times where I wilted, I was still able to grow back and learn from those experiences.”
Q: If you could photograph any person-living or historical-who it be and why?
Jenna: “There isn't any specific person I would like to photograph, but I'd love to get some seniors in the studio. Being able to see all of the details in their faces that make them unique, and hearing their stories is something that really inspires me.”
Q: What’s one lesson you’ve learned that you’d share with new photographers?
Jenna: “One lesson I have learned is that balance is key, do the networking- but don't burn yourself out. Go to local business groups, meet people in person, and reach out if you have any questions- because if the person you asked doesn't know, they can send you in the right direction.
Celebrate the small wins, learn from the losses, and don't forget to take a step back to see how far you've grown.”
Q: What three words would you use to describe your photography style?
Jenna: “I would say warm, moody, and soft. I stayed away from the forced smile and just let my face relax. The studio had the perfect moody natural lighting, and I used the warmer setting on the continuous light to bring in the warmth. I adjusted the lighting and colour afterwards.”
Q: What made the Chelsea studio membership the right fit for you?
Jenna: “Well for one, it's a gorgeous studio. But having people I know I can reach out to and lean on in the White Space community is a pretty big factor in making this the right fit.”
