This month’s spotlight is on a photographer who brought modern + simple vibes to the Soho studio with a beautiful maternity shoot. She shared such a great reminder—never stop learning—and put it into practice by experimenting with a film camera for this session
In the Studio with Emma Loewen
Meet Emma Loewen: a Saskatoon-based photographer who draws endless inspiration from the beauty and simplicity of the prairies. She lives in Saskatoon with her husband Dayton and their daughter Alex, balancing family life with a love for photography, design, and the little things like thrifting, long walks, or popcorn and Coke Zero. Known for her eye for quiet moments and natural beauty, Emma’s work reflects her belief that photography is more than images—it is a way of capturing emotion, nostalgia, and life itself.
Q: What was the vision behind this shoot?
Emma: “My hope was for this shoot to be modern & simple based on the couple's personal style and vision for wardrobe.”
Q: If you could photograph any person-living or historical-who it be and why?
Emma: “Lee Miller-- not that I could ever do her justice, mainly just to meet her. I respect her use of this art form greatly.”
Q: What’s one lesson you’ve learned that you’d share with new photographers?
Emma: “When I first started out 5 years ago I decided to never let myself not be busy. That mindset is one hundred percent the best piece of advice I can give any new photographer. If you're not actively being booked, then actively look for ways to book yourself. As long as the agreement is mutually beneficial I am all for it.
Reach out to people you'd like to work with-- who doesn't like a free photo!? Once you get busy shooting full time it gets harder to make time to plan sessions like this, so I encourage you to view this time as a blessing-- to plan what you'd like to shoot, to reach out to people and brands you'd like to work with. To enjoy this time without all the pressure to learn, to improve and to create work you really love. But if I can drive home one thing is to do this often, as much as you can. I remember using all my free time to plan shoots and styled bridals, I met many of my future clients that way and saw my work dramatically improve in a short amount of time. It takes a lot of hard work but it pays off.
Secondly, an exercise I still practice is to ask myself why often. When you see an image that you are drawn to ask yourself why you like it and really try to pinpoint specific reasons (be it the aperture, the camera angle, the shutter speed, the lighting)-- I find that is the quickest way to identify places you can grow and new things you want to implement in your next session. I am still actively looking for ways to improve and set new goals for myself every year, make sure you know what you are working towards as it helps you make clear decisions regarding your business and its trajectory. .”
Q: Why did you choose White Space Studios for this shoot?
Emma: “I felt the minimalism of the space, and the beautiful light that comes through the windows, would lend itself perfectly to our vision for the session. Plus it's a quick walk to the river to throw in a second look at the end!”
Q: What’s one photo from this shoot that means the most to you, and why?
Emma: “There are a few film photos in this collection that I am really excited about. Learning to properly shoot film on a fully manual camera (focus and settings) is something I've wanted to tackle for awhile. It feels good to see you are getting the hang of things!”
