This month’s spotlight brings us to our Soho studio, where fleeting newborn moments meet the beginning of a beautiful journey as a family of four. Unscripted moments, genuine smiles, and laughter that tells their story.
In the Studio with Emily Ganchar
Meet Emily Ganchar: Based in Saskatoon, Emily has spent the last five years capturing love in its most honest form. Her work is rooted in genuine human connection and intimate moments, whether that unfolds on a wedding day, in the anticipation of new life, through the power of self-appreciation, or at the very beginning of a journey with a soulmate.
When she’s not behind the camera or deep in editing mode, Emily is likely cozying up for a Netflix binge with her wife, dancing at Saskatoon Pole & Dance, or enjoying quiet moments at home with their cats and dogs.
Q: What was the story behind this shoot?
Emily: “The story behind this shoot is simple. The family - who happen to be long time friends of mine - had recently welcomed their second born. We wanted to document the fleeting moment of him being so small and brand new, while also capturing the start of their exciting journey as a family of four.”
Q: If you could photograph any person-living or historical-who it be and why?
Emily: “In this moment, I would love to be able to go back in time and photograph my parents when they were young and just starting their life together. I think it would be so fun and special to be able to witness them in that stage of life.”
Q: What’s one lesson you’ve learned that you’d share with new photographers?
Emily: “To anyone who is just starting out, don't forget to have fun. I would tell them to make sure you're scheduling time for shoots that spark creativity. I have a bucket list of sessions that I keep in my phone and whenever I am feeling in a slump creatively, I refer back to that list and pick one. Grab your friends and just go shoot! Another piece of advice I would like to offer; try and remember to slow down. Since becoming a photographer and diving deeper into this craft, I find inspiration all around me - from the movies I watch, to the way light shines around me. To the way music makes me feel and the way love shows up. But most prominently, in the people around me. From those I interact with to those I pass on the street. There is beauty in everything, you just have to be willing to see it.
I truly am so grateful for the new perspective photography has given me. It has really forced me to slow down and be in the little moments. I genuinely look at the world a little differently since really trying to find my why. Even when life throws the hardest obstacles at you, it is comforting to be able to fall back on the mundane, small, in-between moments that in years from now, will mean the most.”
Q: What’s one photo from this shoot that means the most to you, and why?
Emily: “I truly love every photo from this shoot but one that stands out is the photo where they are sitting on the ground beside the couch and their oldest came behind and gave his parents a hug. It was a moment I let unfold naturally and it created this little special moment and a few genuine smiles and laughs.”
Q: Why did you choose White Space Studios for this shoot?
Emily: “I chose White Space Studios as it offers an open, soft, and comfortable environment to capture any session. I have been using their studios for years and will continue to do so as long as they are available!.”
