In the Studio with Rachelle Block
Meet Rachelle Block: Rachelle is a Saskatchewan based photographer who is passionate about exploring the stories of others; immersing herself in narratives to foster a sense of understanding and compassion. Using shadows and light to freeze genuine emotions, creating images that bring you back to a moment in time.
Q: What was the vision behind this shoot?
Rachelle: “The concept for this maternity session was light, airy, and centered on the divine feminine that radiates through pregnancy. I always want the people I photograph to feel seen, celebrated, and effortlessly beautiful. This shoot was all about soft light, gentle moments, and honoring the power of this season of life.”
Q: If you could photograph any person-living or historical-who it be and why?
Rachelle: “I’d love to join one of Courtney Halverson’s creative concepts — she’s a visionary from New York whose ethereal sets are absolutely breathtaking. Her work feels like stepping into a dream, and being able to photograph within that kind of world would be amazing.
But if I could go back in time, I’d choose something deeply personal — like capturing a moment from my mother’s life. Like her wedding day, or playing outside as a child. Photography is such a powerful connector — it’s the closest we can get to feeling what one is experiencing.”
Q: What’s one lesson you’ve learned that you’d share with new photographers?
Rachelle: “Practice shooting in all kinds of light: harsh midday sun, blue hour, golden hour, deep shadows. Don’t wait for the “perfect” conditions. There’s good light in every situation, but only if you slow down and learn to find it.”
Q: Why did you choose White Space Studios for this shoot?
Rachelle: “I use White Space often because it’s a clean palette that leaves room for endless creativity. The space is versatile, and I know it's always client-ready.”
Q: What’s one photo from this shoot that means the most to you, and why?
Rachelle: “There’s a photo of Avneet leaning against the wall with her eyes closed. I think the prompt was to pause and to thank herself and her body for the beautiful gift it was growing. Pregnancy is such an incredible journey. I hope her baby looks back at that photo someday and thinks, “She’s always loved me - even before she knew my name, my voice, or my face.” To capture pure love is the greatest gift photography has brought me.”
